Welcome to the Regional Planning Guidelines for the Greater Dublin Area website.
The 2000 Planning and Sustainable Development Act requires that all
Regional Authorities shall at the direction of the Minister make Regional
Planning Guidelines. There are 8 Regional Authorities in Ireland, which were
set up in 1994 under the Local Government Act 1991 (Regional Authorities)
Establishment Order 1993.
The main functions of a Regional Authority are:-
To promote co-ordination, co-operation and joint action among the public services and local authorities;
To prepare Regional Planning Guidelines
To review of the overall needs and development requirements of the region;
To review local authority’s Development Plans;
To monitor spending and progress of the National Development Plan and EU Funds.
The Regional Planning Guidelines for the Greater Dublin Area combines two Regional Authority areas - the Dublin Regional Authority and the Mid-East Regional Authority for the purposes of Regional Planning. This approach is provided for in the Planning Act where required by the Minister.
The current Regional Planning Guidelines were made by
the Dublin and Mid-East Regional Authorities on the 15th of June 2010. The
Guidelines cover the Councils of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Dublin City, Fingal and
South Dublin in the Dublin Region and Kildare, Meath and Wicklow County Council
areas in the Mid-East Region.
The Regional Planning Guidelines aim to give regional effect to the National
Spatial Strategy and to guide the development plans for each county. The RPGs
inform the Development Plans in each Council area and have effect for six
years.
A copy of the document is free to download below. The document comes in two volumes- Part 1 which is the Guidelines and Part 2 with contains the Appendices, including the Strategic Environmental Assessment and Report and the Habitat Impact Assessment and Key Economic Background Documents. Paper copies of Volume 1 can also be purchased from the office.
